Review the questions below to help you determine which category best fits your project.

Research

  • Does your work primarily involves basic and/or applied research activities?
  • Does your work primarily involve development of ideas, processes, theories, etc.?
  • Do the activities include inquiry, experiments, or investigation to increase the scholarly understanding of the involved discipline?
  • Does your project include data collection, evaluation, and/or analysis?
  • Does the project include systematic collection of qualitative or quantitative data in order to evaluate curricula, teaching methods, or program operations?
  • Will this funding support the writing of books for the purpose of publishing research results?
  • Will this funding go towards maintenance of facilities or equipment and/or operation of a center or facility which will be used for research?
  • Does the project include training of individuals in research techniques where the activities utilize the same facilities as other research and development activities?
  • Will this funding support graduate student doctoral dissertation activities? This funding may include funds for travel in relation to the dissertation?
  • Is the purpose of the program to train students in research techniques in a laboratory setting, such as NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) and NSF Research Experiences for Teachers (RET)?
  • Will the funding provide students hands-on training in qualitative methods to carry out a social sciences research project designed by a faculty member?
  • Will the funding support students working in industry laboratories to enhance his/her research skills as part of the student’s program of study?

Instruction

  • Will this funding support projects involving ASU students in community service activities for which they WILL receive academic credit?
  • Is the purpose of your project to instruct ASU faculty, students or staff?
  • Is the purpose of your project to instruct teachers or students in elementary or secondary schools?
  • Is the purpose of your project to train public/private managers or administrators on  management tools, processes, procedures?
  • Is the purpose of your project to instruct the general public?
  • Is the training or instruction being given structured for a specific individual or group of individuals to meet a sponsor’s specific agenda or outcomes?
  • is the training or instruction based on previously developed materials and methods and requires no significant revision for use with a specific audience?
  • Will this funding support the writing of textbooks, reference books, videos, or software to be used as instructional materials?
  • Will this be an award to a department, school, or college for the support of students?
  • Will this program bring individuals on campus for ASU-sponsored classes?
  • Does the project develop or launch curricula?
  • Will this funding support the training or initiate the career of a pre- or post-doctoral that leads to a Ph.D. or equivalent research degree?
  • Does the opportunity solicitation describe purpose of the program is to support “training grants”?
  • Will this funding support career training that requires the recipient to pay back services by engaging in clinical research, health-related teaching, or similar activities, such as the National Research Service Awards (NRSA)?
  • Will funding support internships, hands-on experiences, designed to develop connections between ASU students and future careers in business?
  • Will funding primarily support career education, such as training in the arts and library sciences?

  • Will this funding support projects involving ASU students in community service activities for which they will NOT receive academic credit?
  • Will this funding support ASU public events?
  • Will this funding support museum or library collections, acquisitions, bibliographies, or cataloging?
  • Will this funding support conferences, seminars, or workshops?
  • Will this be a travel grant?
  • Will this be a health services project?
  • Will this program  enhance institutional resources, such as upgrading public broadcasting equipment?
  • Will this project use and promote nationally created PBS media?
  • Does the activity make information available in an informal setting to individuals or groups external to ASU?
